I hate to bore you with details but
sometimes people want to know more. I don't want to take up time at the initial
consultation talking about myself. I'd rather you just read the details by
yourself so that when we meet we can focus on how to improve your life.
I grew up in Cementon,
Pennsylvania, just outside of Allentown. Remember the Billy Joel song? I'm one
of seven kids. I went to Penn State and majored in Biochemistry. I went to all
the Penn State games. It was a sad day when I learned about the stuff that went
on with Jerry Sandusky and how Joe Paterno seemed to let it happen. After
college I worked at a small biochemical company outside of West Chester, PA. I
soon got a better job in Baltimore at a biotechnology company developing medical
diagnostic test kits such as a doctor's office strep throat test.
In 1986 I moved to Atlanta for a
position at a small biotechnology start up developing home pregnancy test
kits and a doctors office rapid HIV test. I also bought and ran a small office cleaning and home maid service and
did taxes on the side.
Then I met my wife to be, Lori. She had just started The Bread Market with her
dad. I became very interested in the business and soon became the pastry
manager. I created new recipes from muffins to apple pies. I eventually
managed our one location.
23
years ago I made a career change that I had contemplated for quite some time.
I've always loved reading all the how to get rich in real estate books. I had
attended a lot of real estate investment seminars over the years including John
Adams' how to buy foreclosures course. I've been a member of the Georgia Real
Estate Investors Association and am always looking for good investments.
I never had much regard for real
estate agents though. They were too much like salespeople. It used to drive me
crazy sometimes just trying to find out the price of a home. They would force
you to call them and then they'd try to hook you into using their services.
When I started in real estate, I vowed that I would never be a pushy, obnoxious
salesman. I would be the agent who provided the information freely and
provided all the experience required to make a transaction come together
smoothly. I vowed to make sure that I was knowledgeable about all aspects of
the business. I've never liked to do things half way. When I do something, I
want to do it the best I can.
The Internet has changed how people
buy real estate. I love it. There's more information for people to take
advantage of. Some agents are scared of losing their control of the information
and fear that they will become unnecessary. Those agents really didn't know
what they were offering in the first place.
I have found that even though people have a
lot of data, they really don't know how much they still don't know. They still
need an experienced agent to put it all together and make it happen.
I had a client whose parents in Florida had a neighbor offer to buy their
home. No real estate agent was involved. It was a situation where the buyer
said "I want to buy your house." The seller said "OK." Then they both said
"now what?" It took over a week for an attorney to put together a simple
contract. It made me realize how important agents are in bringing the
transaction all together. It's still a people business with personalities and
emotions to deal with.
